Why Has “Made in Italy” Become a Standard of Quality?

From fashion and furniture to architecture and kitchen appliances, Made in Italy has become closely associated with design, craftsmanship and enduring quality.

But what makes these three words so influential?

The answer is not simply where a product is made. It is the combination of design culture, material expertise, craftsmanship and technological development that has evolved in Italy over generations.

Italy has a long tradition of treating everyday objects as opportunities for design. Form is considered alongside function, with attention given to proportion, material and detail.

In the kitchen, this philosophy can be seen in the way appliances become part of the architecture rather than simply occupying space.

Barazza is a clear example. Founded in 1968 in Santa Lucia di Piave, within Italy’s renowned Inox Valley, the company has built its identity around stainless steel, combining craftsmanship with technological innovation. Its production remains centred at its own facilities, where design, manufacturing and quality control are brought together.

Italian manufacturing heritage is also closely connected to an understanding of materials.

For Barazza, stainless steel has been a defining material for decades. The company uses AISI 304 stainless steel for many of its creations, valued for its corrosion resistance and hygiene, while AISI 316 is used for its Outdoor collection because of its resistance to atmospheric conditions.

This is where luxury becomes tangible. A beautiful design is only as convincing as the material, construction and finishing behind it.

Made in Italy does not mean remaining attached to the past.

The strongest Italian manufacturers combine traditional expertise with modern production technologies. Barazza, for example, incorporates Industry 4.0 manufacturing processes while continuing to emphasise craftsmanship and attention to detail throughout production.

Elica follows a similar philosophy in kitchen appliances, describing its approach around the combination of design, art and innovation, with more than five decades of experience in extraction and kitchen technology.

Perhaps the most enduring quality of Italian design is its ability to move beyond short-lived trends.

A timeless kitchen is not defined by how fashionable it looks today. It is defined by how naturally its materials, proportions and technology continue to belong within the home years later.

That is why Made in Italy has become more than a country of origin. For many premium brands, it represents a design philosophy : where craftsmanship supports innovation, and technology is shaped with an eye for beauty.
